Prioritizing 5-9 After Your 9-5

As a leader, you may find yourself working late at the office or taking your work home. It’s easy to get caught up and lose track of time. Below are a few tips for leaders to prioritize their well being without sacrificing the quality of their work.

  • First, you need to accept that as a leader, there will always be work that needs to be done. Even if you stay late to finish a project, there will be more projects and assignments waiting for you. This is expected with a leadership role; it’s okay to only tackle one task at a time.

  • Every morning, set your intentions for the day. Establish one goal that you will prioritize achieving. It’s best to stick to only one goal so that the changed behavior is sustainable. Trying to accomplish several goals at once can feel overwhelming. If your goal is to be out the door by 5 p.m., set a reminder that tells you to stop what you’re doing at 4:55 p.m. and pack up to leave. If your goal is to finish a task, set a designated time to complete it before the end of the work day so that you do not feel obligated to stay late.

  • Try a time blocking method. Being a leader comes with eclectic job duties and you may find you spend more time accomplishing certain tasks over others. A time blocking schedule allows you to set a specific timeframe to work on those neglected tasks and avoid procrastination.

  • Schedule an activity you enjoy for after work. This could be as simple as spending time with family or friends, cooking a nutritious meal, going to a workout class, or catching up on your favorite show. Use this activity as motivation to put your work down and enjoy your evening.

  • Communicate with your staff and colleagues. Inform them that you’re working toward a balanced work-life integration. Encourage them to join you. This will help build a positive work environment and drive you to lead by example.
